Leah Lui-Chivizhe received the Student Excellence Award Scholarship last month for her work on the historical use of turtle shell and fishing of turtles by the people of the Torres Strait Islands.
The award was presented to Leah by Bankmecu as part of the CSIRO Malcolm McIntosh Memorial Lecture, which this year was delivered by SEI co-director and author of The Reef Professor Iain McCalman.
The scholarship will help pay for Leah’s doctoral studies and possibly even fund a trip to the Torres Strait to assist her research.
